Sydney Turns Purple

Chatswood

The best thing about November in Sydney is the colour.

Gorgeous purple flowers against deep blue skies. It is the end of spring. The days are getting warmer and there is a definite lift in mood as summer approaches.

Mostly the colour comes from the Jacaranda Tree's which line the streets of Sydney's North Shore and other suburbs. I have taken these photos around Chatswood and Lane Cove.

Also, flowering at this time are Agapanthus which border many front garden and fence here in our Northern suburbs.

One minor drawback is that it can get messy! Although for all of this beauty, I don't mind a bit of mess. Besides, there is usually a massive southerly at some point which blows it all away. That's Sydney for you!

Textile Designer Portrait and Exhibition

Chantal O'Reilly, is an amazing textile Designer, who needed some quality images for her website and upcoming exhibition.

Chantal conceptualised the lush fabrics draping over the rustic ladder. So it was my job to work out the best backdrop and lighting in order to compliment the fabrics and flatter their designer!

I chose the brown/black canvas backdrop that I had hand painted as the most complimentary in colour, texture and overall effect.

As far as lighting, I went for diffused, soft lighting on both the fabrics and the client. I really liked the way the lighting brought out the soft, shiny texture of the fabric.

First things first though. Makeup for our Designer.

MJ (Makeup by MJ) is fantastic and does a lot of work for the studio. Professional makeup makes all the difference to the final image. Having a proper base means less shiny patches on the skin for a start. Also, the artist brings out the clients features so they further appreciate the end result. Who doesn't like to look their best!

How exciting to see the finished products on exhibit!

There were many visitors from the Design world including Interior Decorators to Fashion Designers such as well known Akira. (people absolutely giddy with excitement that he was in attendance). And happily there was plenty of interest in in Chantals designs. Here are a few. You can check her website www.chantalo.com for many other wonderful designs.

Two creatives working together was just simply a whole lot of fun!

The Worst Bushfires In A Decade - Sydney Bushfire Smoke Over Chatswood

This is where I live. Chatswood.

Last night on my way home from a meeting, the wind changed direction and the smoke from over 100 burning bushfires smothered our town. Sydney Morning Herald touts that these are the "worst in more than a decade".

my street

I woke this morning to find out that 34 of these fires are uncontained, out of control. Mother nature is MAD!

Possibly 100's of families have lost their homes and everything in or around them including pets and livestock. A devastating tragedy.

What makes me mad is that some of these fires were most likely caused by someone carelessly tossing a cigarette out of their car window...seriously. How stupid are these people??

Thankful for the cooler day today as I am certain all of our brave firefighters are too. I hope it is all under control very soon.

Portrait of a Muscian - Danny May

It was an honor for me to photograph Danny. I really respect his artistic skill and he is such a nice guy as well!

We first met at the Marist College production of Copacabana. I photographed the show and Danny was first trumpet! My son played second trumpet next to Danny which was an amazing experience for him. He was actually introduced to me as "Australia's Best Trumpeter!!

You can see some of the images from the show here.

Danny is out and about playing Jazz in Sydney. You can also see some of his mean jazz skills on this youtube clip! The quality isn't great so you will just have to buy a ticket and go see him perform!!

Swim Action Photos - District Championships 2012

The SMNE Summer Championships were a blast. There were lots of records and some great photos which were helped along by a new faster, sharper 300mm lens. It was difficult to choose but here are a few favourites. You can view the entire set here on my swim photos website.

Sydney Harbour from Quay Restaurant

Quay Restaurant is situated at the Ocean Liner terminal in Sydney Harbour. After dinner we went for a stroll upstairs and out onto the deck. The view is outstanding. I can understand why so many functions are held here.

Old Sydney Town has some pretty buildings.

Glimpse of Sydney - Angel Place

When I stepped onto George Street from Wynyard Station for the first time in 15 years, I was astounded at how much downtown Sydney had changed. I was heading to a function so in a hurry but I promise to spend more time wandering the streets and offering you a glimpse into my favourite city in the world!

Sydney Harbour from Luna Park

Whilst the kids had a ton of fun on the rides at Luna Park, I spent a short while taking some images of Sydney Harbour. It was kind of an icky day but nonetheless, a pretty aspect of the harbour.
