Speedo Sprints - Event Swim Action Photography

Swim photography is not just about capturing the strokes, although that is fun too. For me, I like to capture moments inside and outside the pool.


The tension as a team mate is swimming a close race. Sheer joy or occasionally disappointment after a tough swim.


This weekend, I am the official photographer for the SMNE Speedo Sprints. A big challenge because it is an indoor venue and the light is low. 


Sometimes the swimmers didn't breathe, especially in the 50's. Other times they breathed away from me. 


There were no breaks. Just 8 hours of walking around the pool taking shots.


I don't really have a sports camera, so I had to rely on timing. My 200mm lens meant that I could only shoot 4 lanes...I really needed two of me!


My memory cards filled up quickly, (approx 40GB) even with reviewing and deleting. I was able to download a card on to my portable hard drive whilst I filled the next card but I was nervous deleting the images from the card so that I could use it again. 


Despite all of the technical issues, I thought it worked out ok.


I will be shooting at SOPAC again this weekend at the District Sprint Qualifying Meet so I may see you there!




The participating teams were excellent...some of these were; Abbotsleigh Swimming Club, Carlile Swimming Club, Knox Pymble Swimming Club, Ku-ring gai Swimming Club, Lane Cove Swimming Club, Northbridge Swimming Club, North Sydney Swimming Club, Hunters Hill Swimming Club, Ravenswood Swimming Club, Terrey Hills Swimming Club, Warringah Swimming Club and Willoughby Swimming Club.

I love those shots, well if you want to take a good action shot from swimming sports then you really need a water proof case camera to also help you take good angle even in underwater.

I am well aware of the old adage, never work with children or pets but I find the challenge they present, half the fun! What's a little Hedgehog poop among friends... Puppies are like children in that they grow up so fast. Their features and expressions alter as they mature. As with children, I recommend that you take as many images as possible to record this evolution. The pet can be a little nervous on set at first so a little coercion helps. After a few hours of shooting, set changes, outfit and hairstyle changes, we decided to blow off some steam. Just in the casual shirt she came in, Shelly sat for some fun natural shots. We were trying to get the fan going to blow back her hair but it was a mess and we just ended up laughing. The real fun started when Shelly began pulling some amazing expressions. Walking Sydney - City to St Leonards

Sean giving us instructions I joined this meetup group some time ago but haven't managed a walk until now. I am so pleased that I finally did. We met in Lang Park in York Street. Our fearless leader, Sean handed us each a map and a few tips and suggestions for staying safe and then we were on our way. Our First Stop at Observatory Hill Setting a pretty fast pace, we headed to Observatory Hill where we quickly stopped to regroup then walked over the Bridge to Kirribilli. There is a water fountain here, so a good spot to refill our water bottles. Here is my map. The part to The Bridge is a little dodgy because of the GPS (I forgot to turn it on..doh!) but the rest is good. London Eye from Westminster Bridge as a Red tourist bus passes On a recent visit, I found London to be a bustling hive of activity. Everyone was one the move. Tourists, shoppers, out of town visitors, theatre goers and locals alike.   As the train weaves its way through the vast green, undulating hills of Kent, I feel a mild flurry of anticipation. Cambodian kids bring tears of joy! - Our visit to a remote school in Thailand

Steps With Hope Desperately in need of funds to continue their support of this little school in Thailand, Founder of  Steps With Hope , Jen Spoor, hosted a Mother's Day High Tea. After her presentation, I said to Jen, "if you want to make a bigger impact, you need better photos".   So that was that and I committed to visiting the school on their next trip.   Meet The Kids If you're like us, you will want to meet the kids right away. There are about 70 children currently attending the school with three classes starting at Kindergarten age.  These children come from poor Khmer families, remnants of a recovering population that has endured one of the darkest times times in its history.  Around 3 million people slaughtered and many more terrorized by the Khmer Rouge has left a devastated people still clawing its way back to normality.  Families reside in makeshift huts just over the border in Cambodia. We spend so much time at the pool, it was finally good to be in the studio again, even if it was for a swim portrait! These photos are for Brandon's athlete Facebook page which will one day soon be used to help gain swim sponsorship's. For me, it's good practice for when the big guys, Speedo or Engine come knocking on my door...wish me luck!
